Runes

Runes is a fungible token protocol created by Casey Rodarmor. It encodes token operations in OP_RETURN outputs, keeping the UTXO set clean. Runes launched at Bitcoin's fourth halving (block 840,000).

Key Concepts

  • Rune ID — Unique identifier in block:index format (e.g., 840000:1)
  • Etching — Creating a new Rune with a name, symbol, divisibility, and supply terms
  • Minting — Creating new token units according to the Rune's terms
  • Runestone — The OP_RETURN message that encodes Rune operations in a transaction

What You Can Query

Rebar Data indexes all Runes activity:

  • Current and historical token balances for any wallet
  • All events (mints, transfers, burns) at any block height
  • Holders of any Rune, ranked by balance
  • Unspent UTXOs containing Runes for a given wallet
  • Events for a specific transaction
  • Verification hashes for data integrity
